Affordable housing: this simple 3 bedroom dwelling combines privacy and outdoor living in the heart of subtropical Bellingen NSW. The architecture responds to the vernacular 1950’s fibro house character of the neighbourhood with a contemporary re-interpretation of the volumes, material and fenestration. Bedrooms and living areas open to the morning sun with outdoor decks for outdoor living. The lounge/dining/kitchen features a double height ceiling where a compact site presented the opportunity utilise spaciousness vertically. Bedroom and bathrooms are positioned to the south away from street noise, tucked under skillion roof volumes: insulated and cosy. Compact living is a principle tenet of sustainable design with less energy and resource use in the construction of Low budget, low cost, low material and resource use = affordable and sustainable.
